Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene has passed north of the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico where it left 800,000 people without power.  The expected path is planned to take it toward the East Coast of the United States near Florida, directly through the Bahamas.  Dense cloud cover, heavy showers and thunderstorms are covering a vast area north of the lesser Antilles.  Sustained winds of 110 mph accompany the first hurricane of the Atlantic Hurricane season.  Predictions are for the hurricane to increase to a category 4 storm by Wednesday.

Hurricane Irene to arrive in South Florida by Thursday afternoon and residents could begin to feel the effects of strong winds, heavy rains and increased tides by early that morning.  Deadly rip currents will exist and account for the most deaths during hurricanes.  Hurricane Irene churns in the Caribbean as seen in this enhanced NOAA satellite image taken at 4:45 a.m. ET, Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011.
